red light for under eyes: what it can and can't do.

Red light is having a moment. There are masks, wands, panels and now glasses-style eye devices, including ours. There are also a lot of big promises. Here's a plain account of what red light under the eyes can reasonably do, and what it can't.

what it is.

Red light devices use small LEDs that give off visible red light at low power. It's gentle, it doesn't burn or tan, and it isn't a laser. You feel a faint warmth at most.

what it can do.

  • Help your eyes look more rested. Used regularly, many people find the skin under their eyes looks less tired.
  • Help reduce the look of puffiness, especially combined with gentle massage, which is why bewhile halo pairs red light with EMS.
  • Give you a real break. Ten minutes with your eyes closed is worth something on a screen-heavy day, whatever device is involved.

Research into red light for skin is promising but still early, and much of it comes from small studies. That's why you'll only see us say "helps" and "the look of".

what it can't do.

  • Remove pigmentation. Brown under-eye colour that runs in families won't fade under red light.
  • Fill hollows. A shadow from the shape of your face isn't changed by light.
  • Work overnight. Expect weeks of regular use, not days. Anyone showing you a dramatic before-and-after from one session is selling something.
  • Treat any medical condition. It's a personal care device.

how to use it safely.

  • Keep your eyes closed, and don't look into the LEDs.
  • One session a day is enough. More isn't better.
  • Don't use it after eye surgery, with an eye infection or broken skin, during pregnancy, or if you have a pacemaker or epilepsy.
  • Stop if anything feels painful, and ask your doctor if you're unsure.

what to look for when you buy.

  • Honest claims. "Helps reduce the look of" is honest. "Removes dark circles in 7 days" is not.
  • Specs you can check: session length, timer, charging type, weight, warranty.
  • A real person to ask. Can you reach the seller before you buy?
  • Returns and warranty in writing, not just in a chat.
